The Motivations of STEM Mentors

Little is known about why people decide to mentor in the context of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) learning. The purpose this qualitative study was identify motivations undergraduate student mentors working an afterschool STEM program for underrepresented elementary schoolboys. We used self-determination theory (SDT) explain students decided become and, some them, persist as mentors. interviewed a sample 16 their backgrounds experiences over three semesters. participants experienced intrinsic extrinsic Each articulated more than one reason, suggesting are multifaceted. Some did not fit well with SDT, which points underlying complexity how mentors’ shape motivations.
